It is wonderful to see the cross-over of media from online to print – as the words of ‘paperless world’ reverberate across the world wide web with a sarcastic laugh in my head. By publishing a book, we feel it reaffirms the blogging medium’s acceptance if not nearing maturity.
These blogs that are printed as books are a new genre of fiction; known as ‘blooks’.
A new literary award has just been announced. Offered by the book publishing site Lulu, the award honours blooks. The 2007 Blooker has three categories of fiction, non-fiction and comics. The overall winner - announced on 14 May - will take home $10,000 (£5,170). One hundred and ten blooks from 15 countries were entered for this year’s prize and increasingly traditional publishers are sitting up and taking notice.
Well-known blogs that have become books include The Devil Wears Prada and Belle de Jour: The Intimate Adventures of a London Call-Girl.
