Allow us to point you in the direction of the results of Australian research released towards the end of 2008:
News release from University of Melbourne on study, 25 November 2008
University of Melbourne Green Internet Symposium
Dr Rod Tucker’s ‘excellent and detailed technical analysis’
Briefly highligts of the findings are:
Major contributors to Internet power consumption will be take-up of broadband services (increase in use of Video on Demand, web based real-time gaming, social networking, peer-to-peer networking and more. For the business community, new services may include video conferencing, outsourcing and tele-working etc).
Exponential growth of the Internet is not sustainable.
Capacity of the Internet will need to be significantly increased. If Internet capacity is increased, the energy consumption, and consequently the carbon footprint of the Internet will also increase.
Energy is needed to power and cool Internet equipment that provides high speed broadband.
The industry needs to focus efforts to ensure the Internet is energy efficient.
