If you are using an up-to-date web browser there is a favicon in it. It is ths space just in front of where the URL appears. Often a default appears as companies delay adapting to the changes in browsers. It’s 16×16 pixel square in size. Follow this link to the explanation on wikipedia of favicon (favourites icon).
Google are causing a stir this week by adapting a totally new look for their favicon rather than an adaption of their logo. But honestly how would they squeeze six letters into that size and do they want to be known only by their distinctive capital G? Infact I’m not sure I recall what it was before they started using this new one! Visit http://www.google.com/ and look at the url bar.
