There is much online buzz on the pressure to accept friend requests from those Myspace, Bebo, Facebook junkies out there.
How often do people decline the friend offer?
It appears there is pressure for people to have 100s of online friends. This is perhaps from the origins of these services - which were originally targetting 18 year olds who do have 100s of friends and acquaintances and perhaps a lot less to hide than their elders. Perhaps their tastes haven’t yet developed and they aren’t as discerning yet?
I rather like the definition in using Linked in for business networking, where old colleagues, suppliers are welcome and Facebook where friends, but no old boyfriends or my least fav colleagues, are welcome.
Doktorow’s article warns that sociallly obligated “friends” on social networks will bring down the social network craze TM.
Go on - say ‘NO’. But will you?

I won’t.
The beauty of social networks is in meeting new people.
Sure, most of them will probably not be my best online friends, but social networks are all about social networking, inferring that you’re not supposed to communicate only with the ones you truly know.
The problem, of course, is that your friend list is turning into a mess. I use 8hands to organize my activity and it’s a very helpful tool. it also has a top 8 section, indicating who are the 8 friends with whom I’ve communicated the most.
