The US stock marked fell today (Nov 14 2008) as reports of declining stock held by businesses hit Wall Street. The contributing factors are enormous and complex, but could it be? wish is was, perhaps it’s really making an impact, the population have committed enough green acts to make a difference?
They didn’t rush out and buy NEW, they went to their local charity, garage sale, searched and bought on the likes of ebay or craigslist, second hand from amazon, borrowed or swapped items or simply didn’t need it so didn’t buy it. So, the shops (partly) reduced their stock levels according to demand (we know there are a lot of other factors effecting demand at the moment).
Then they made a compost heap with the appropriate kitchen waste, planted a herb garden and vegetables in an old yoghurt pot or planter, winterized their home to maximise heating, did a micro finance loan with Kiva with their spare $25 they’d saved, changed their light bulbs to low voltage, walked to work, caught the bus or did a car share, drank tap water and never bought bottled water in restaurants, reused plastic containers for lunch packs or freezing leftovers, waited the extra day or two until they had a full load and washed their clothes at a lower temperature…
These are just some of the acts that can make a difference. Just think if every ONE only did ONE of the above or of the many other options available what an impact it would make.
In Canada, CBC (our client) and CISCO have initiated a movement to educate and change the habits of the nation. Supported by their networking site; http://green.cbc.ca that allows users to register, partake in some good old competition to see whose doing the most, gives ideas, measures effectiveness, shares information and teaches new tricks with videos, copy and images.
The site was launched end October 2008.
It was an instant hit with companies actively encouraging employees to participate and the general population joining in. The site uses the pallet of greens creatively and all information is clearly laid out and easy to see. A range of icons are used to depict acts of green and are instantly recognisable. Content is a good balance of user generated and provided.
Make a difference and do one green at today no matter which country you live in. What will you do today?

Ireland have a carbon emissions control site; http://www.change.ie/.
In the USA, NBC Universal have http://www.greenisuniversal.com/ to help motivate their audience to change.
I’ve got addicted to seeing what other countries are doing to inspire and mobilise the general population to change their habits. In the UK ‘Do The Green Thing’ site is effective; http://www.dothegreenthing.com/about.
Whilst on the subject of all things green, I see advertised/announced in this week’s issue of PRWEEK the winners of the 2008 Green Awards for Creativity in Sustainability and a great cross selection of those you’d expect; such as Website (under 50k) Friends of the Earth’s http://www.thebigask.com, Campaigner http://www.Batterrecycling-uk.co.uk (what a mouthful of a url - wonder why they had to have the -uk at the end and didn’t think that co.uk was enough to identify the site as from the UK?) and digital Green Thing’s Walk the Walk.
and those you wouldn’t necessarily expect; Nokia for overall winner and internal communications winner.
See full list of winners at http://www.greenawards.co.uk.
