San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom declared yesterday what Californians who suspected for months that he is running for governor in 2010. He made the declaration to his already loyal supporters following him on Twitter:
# It’s official- running for Gov of CA. Wanted you to be the first to know. Need your help. Check out video: http://tr.im/iOCN and ReTweetabout 22 hours ago from txt
The link is to his website that looks remarkably similar to two political sites we’ve seen recently and directly to the fund raising page. A couple of hours later he was very explicit about his financial needs:
# Help us raise $20,000 online today. Need your support if we are going to change CA. Please ReTweet — http://tr.im/ji64about 20 hours ago from web
followed by the information that they’d got to $15,000 later on that day, so more was needed; cough up please.
For the rest of the world, he loaded up a speach about the announcement on his website from You Tube. His site declared: “Today, I am announcing, via Tweet, my candidacy for governor,” the Democrat’s website declared. http://www.gavinnewsom.com/home/#
Currently he’s using Facebook, TouTube, Flickr, Twitter and Digg to support his efforts. The LA Times reports on the announcement here: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-newsom22-2009apr22,0,2488008.story?track=rss
This is further evidence that Twitter is a mainstream mode of communication.
Your fans, opposition and interested parties can happily track your bite size news as it comes in. Twitter is micro blogging - you are allowed 140 characters for each post. The registered audience can comment for all too see - this level of transparency should keep all on the straight and narrow! Let’s take a snapshot in time; Gavin’s current following is: 23,888 (subscribers) with 283,797 Followers (visitors).
